As if Hollywood didn't give non-celebrities enough of a beauty complex, even talented stars have been shamed by haters in the entertainment industry because of their looks. It's really hard to imagine, but some of the most successful actresses were actually told early on in their careers that they weren't attractive enough to make it in Hollywood! Here are a few celebrities who proved all of those haters so wrong...
MERYL STREEP
SARAH JESSICA PARKER
In the ‘90s we knew her best as the ditzy sister in Hocus Pocus. We now know her as the beautiful and fashionable writer Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City. But the actress who portrays both characters, Sarah Jessica Parker, has been criticized for her appearance many times. Maxim Magazine even named her "Unsexiest Woman Alive" in 2008.
LEA MICHELE
She has encouraged young girls all over the world by playing the unpopular girl with a big nose on Glee. Rachel Berry has reminded us that our dreams do matter. They can even come true if we have a little faith. But Lea Michele was told at only 15-years-old she needed to get a nose job. Her mother, Edith, told her that if Barbra Streisand didn't get a nose job, then neither was Lea.
CHRISSY TEIGEN
Chrissy Teigen should be everyone's favorite super model just because of how funny she is. Magazines are in long lines to get her to work with them, but that wasn't always the case. Forever 21 once hired her directly, but upon seeing her, they changed their minds. They called her agency and said she was too fat. So being good enough for the cover of Sports Illustrated isn't the same as being good enough for Forever 21. That makes sense, right?!
MINDY KALING
The Mindy Project is one of the best comedies on television. It's all thanks to Mindy Kaling's portrayal of the lovable, beautiful, and smart Dr. Mindy Lahiri. The Mindy Project is created, written, and produced by Kaling. A TV station once picked up another sitcom written by Kaling, but refused to cast her as the lead actress. What was their reason? They wanted a prettier actress. Kaling moved on, created The Mindy Project, and we're sure she's not looking back now.
MINKA KELLY
Imagine this: You're a 19-year-old aspiring actress and a Playboy Playmate says they can help you. The catch is you have to trade a few weeks' work at a plastic surgeon's office for a more voluptuous body. This is the true story of Minka Kelly, however, she decided not to take the Playmate's advice. The Friday Night Lights actress and ex-girlfriend of Derek Jeter ended up ok.
